Voice

What is voice?

Voice is the way we use and control our vocal folds and breath to make sounds. Our voice can be loud or soft and high-pitched or low-pitched, and is influenced by our emotions. We can hurt our voice by talking too much, yelling or even coughing. A child's voice plays a large role in their sense of identity.

What is a voice disorder?

A voice disorder can be characterised by unusual voice volume, pitch, nasality and/or quality. In children, this could sound like a very quiet voice or a hoarse voice quality. Voice disorders in children are most commonly a result of  overuse, but can also be caused by illness or surgery. About 5% of Australian children experience a chronic voice disorder. An ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) specialist may also be consulted when voice disorders are present.

How can we help?

At Discover Speech Pathology, we offer speech pathology services to children aged up to 18 years. We work collaboratively with children and their families to assess, diagnose and treat voice difficulties or disorders.
