What is literacy?

Literacy is reading, spelling and writing. Reading and writing are learnt skills, meaning that unlike talking, people need to be explicitly taught how to read and write.

What is a literacy delay or disorder?

A difficulty in literacy can be divided into difficulties with reading and/or writing. These are known as specific learning disabilities in reading and/or writing (previously known as Dyslexia and/ or Dysgraphia). Approximately 16% of Australian children have difficulties learning to read.

How can we help?

At Discover Speech Pathology, we offer speech pathology services to children aged up to 18 years. We work collaboratively with children and their families to identify and treat literacy difficulties. We complete standardised academic assessments to identify areas of difficulty in language, phonological processing and reading, and use this information to support goal setting and develop individualised, evidence-based intervention plans. Our Speech Pathologists are trained and experienced providers of the 'Sounds-Write' literacy program. Request an appointment today to begin your journey with us!
